What's New in Syslog Watcher 2.8?

This section lists new and enhanced features available with the release of Syslog Watcher 2.8.

Exporting Syslog to Database

The main improvement of this version is a possibility to export syslog messages into a database. Syslogs are exported into the database immediately after they are received. Using of standard interface ODBS to access the DB allows the use of any DB engine. In addition, the SQL commands used for writing syslog messages into the database can be edited. This provides additional setting flexibility and does not restrict the inner database structure.

Enhanced Report Generation

New settings for generating reports have been added to the present version. Now you can choose the exact information to be included in the report. Additionally, the report may include not only statistical information but also all received messages as tables. The messages are grouped according to their severity level.

Improved E-mail Capability

The mechanism of e-mail alerts has been updated completely. The authorization type may be specified explicitly when connecting to the e-mail server.

This section lists new and enhanced features available with the release of Syslog Watcher 2.7.

Extended Support of National Languages

The setting to explicitly specify a codepage for parsing received syslogs was added to the program. This allows the syslog messages containing event text in UTF-8 format to be processed correctly. The improvements were also applied to the storage and internal processing of text containing national symbols. This improved the results when exporting messages to XML files, including reports and email alerts.

Processing of Syslog Message Content

Processing the textual contents of syslogs has been improved in the new version. Apart from the ability to remove unnecessary trailing symbols and nonprintable symbols in the message body, it is now possible to resolve IP addresses. Syslog Watcher recognizes addresses within the contents of syslogs and resolves them into DNS names.

Improved Report Generation

Options for report generation have been enhanced in version 2.7. Now users can analyze syslogs for a specific period of time, specified in hours, days, or weeks. It is also possible to specify the severity levels that are included in the reports.

Another major innovation in the recent version is the ability to generate reports without launching the viewer. This is accomplished by using the command line parameters. Thus, it is possible to create reports according to a schedule. For generating reports, users can use all power of Windows Task Scheduler to make schedules.

Other Enhanced Features

• Ability to export syslogs to external text files that are distributed to several subfolders according to the syslog message source
• Ability to add multiple addresses in the "To" field for email alerts

This section lists the new and enhanced features available with the release of Syslog Watcher 2.6.

Email Alerts

In this version we added email alerts. Alert mechanism allows to identify the most important syslog messages and immediately inform about them by e-mail. This also helps to reduce the system administrator's reaction time to critical incidents in the network.

Alerts generating depends on the list of conditions which can be configured in the way you need. In addition you can specify e-mail template in appropriate way, which allows to get all the necessary information and recognize them in e-mail client.

What's New in Syslog Watcher 2.5?

This section lists the new and enhanced features available with the release of Syslog Watcher 2.5.

Filter Toolbar

We have improved the filtering toolbar. You can not only specify the time interval for messages displayed in the list, but also check the displayed severities with a couple of clicks. Moreover, improved filtering of the text content makes finding messages extremely easy. You simply type the text that you are looking for, and the messages are filtered in real time.

Syslog Reports

This version supports the generation of statistical reports on collected syslog messages. Simply specify the time interval to receive a detailed syslog report. This will help you to monitor your network effectively. The reports are generated in HTML format, and information is presented in tables and diagrams.

Date and Time Formats

Syslog Watcher now has the capability to specify custom date and time formats.

XML and CSV Support

This version supports the export of syslog messages to XML format. Therefore, you can load exported messages into a large number of applications or convert them to any format. In addition, this version has improved exporting to CSV format.

Export to Text

Automatic export messages to text file was also improved. Therefore, you can now also use CSV or XML formats. Further, there is a new file-creating feature. For example, you can specify the creation of a new export file every day. It also helps to simplify syslog analysis.

Multiple Sorting

You can now sort syslog messages in the grid using several criteria at the same time. This allows you to sort messages by one column first, and then by another parameter within each group. You can now easily accomplish this by simply clicking on the column header and holding the Shift key.

New "Settings" Style

The "Settings" window was completely changed and is now very easy to use. All settings are organized into groups and can be modified easier. Moreover, you can use helpful hyperlinks for frequent actions.
